Black Design: Useless

This is the UseLess publication, a culmination of works and ideas from 30 international and local designers who featured in the Utterrubbish and UseLess Exhibition.

I actually found this piece before I learned about the exhibition and thought that the design was very intriguing.

The idea of a book that can be carried like a bag was interesting enough but if you see someone carrying something like that with " rubbish" written on it, you are immediately drawn to it.

From a distance it just looks like a paper bag, the design on the front doesn't give anything away that it is in fact a book.

The outside and inside of the book are beautifully designed and crafted and definitely a piece of work in its own right as well as a book produced for an exhibition

This is a visual metaphor represent the book which is full of ideas as a bag full of useless things

Antelier: Mini Mono

8 adhesive tapes are placed on the wall and over five days of the exhibition they all roll down to the ground. The tapes writes out " Mini Mono"

Can this be considered as a type installation? The type creates itself over a short period of time and reveals itself at the end

I think this is a lovely innovative idea but again it may not work as well with other words/text.

Atelier Bubentraum

The typeface was inspired from crowded apartment blocks/balconies and what seems to be its opposites, an old castle. The letter forms are made of windows and architectural components to the two very different constructions. I thought that it is a fun typeface with an interesting inspirations to it which could h be used to poster designs although it may not have a high readability but still very visually interesting

AKatre(Valentin Abad, Julien Dhivert and Sebastien Riveron)2

This is a typographic design by Akatre.

I like its simplicity and how clean it looks. The type is three dimensional and may not be appropriate to be used as an actually typeface in a context. But it think that the type, like many other type design, works as a piece of art work on its own. The way that it is presented, photographed and crafted turns it into an artwork. Its not even important what the words say but I think it is the way that each letter flows into another that really makes a difference

Akatre(Valentin Abad, Julien Dhivert and Sebastien Riveron)

These are various poster designs by Akatre. these contemporary designs were made for posters promoting different events such as plays, concerts, exhibition and etc. The group design their own typefaces which are used in different projects.

I love the consistency of the format and how its logical in terms of composition but at the same time, the imagery in each of the posters are very abstract and contemporary. These posters really has a high impact on when you first see them and then you realise that this is all about when you read the text.

I believe that the designers use a visual synecdoche of using a small elements from each event to represent the whole.

Sarah Kahn

The Screen Shot Poster 2008

These 3D posters are mimics of Adobe creative suite programmes such as photoshop and illustrator.

I liked the idea of turning programmes into something physical and looking like how they would on the screen. It may be that the designer is communicating her views on creating art on a screens and bringing it back to the non digital world. The way that the posters are presented has made this piece of work even more visually intriguing. The photographs taken from different angle show the dimensions of the work.

In this piece of work, the artist uses a visual metonym to associate her work to the programmes used in creative line of work such as photoshop and illustrator.

Pablo Alfieri

This is an editorial design for Dale! Magazine. I believe that the designer used appropriate type and images to correspond ti each other in order to communicate to the audience. Magazines contain a lot of words and images and sometimes can look quite boring. I particularly liked this design as I think that the images are attention grabbing and even though it is quite wordy. I, as an audience is drawn to read it. The design is consistent and logical and the use of that type with that particular style of ullustration was very appropriate
